"Everything's Better When Everyone's Gay"

In the wake of the decision of the California Supreme Court--which I'm trying to figure out why everyone is shocked by this. The No on 8 people argued about as effectively as the campaign was.

What Storm?

Sean Chapin’s* terrific response to the National Organization for Marriage video trying to scare the Christianists:

This is beginning to blow up in NOM’s face—it’s now reported by the HRC that they auditioned actors, not real people, for their ad. They can never win on the truth, can they? Just keep perpetuating the lie and hope it catches does not honor God.

And on an even brighter note, from Joe. My. God.: it’s only a matter of time, why fight the inevitable? Gay marriage is coming:

Picture courtesy of Joe.My.God. (used completely without permission... I feel awful about it. But not so awful I didn't use it... bygones!)

*Contrary to what one friend noted, I did not post Sean's video because he's really cute... however, truth be told, it didn't hurt. I've been crushing on this guy for years...

Update: I sent this note to Sean this morning. Spread the word, people--this video can effect change.

Sean,

I was having drinks last night with a friend when the subject of your video came up. She and I have had several debates on gay marriage and she’s had a hard time reconciling her religion to gay marriage. Yesterday, I sent a note out to all my friends to watch it. She did…

…and she finally got it!

It blew me away. I’ve been discussing it with her for so long, we became broken records: repeating the same arguments over and over. However, your video got her to look at it from outside herself; it’s not about her, it’s about other people loving each other.

When she said “I wish I could take back my vote [for Yes on 8]”, it gave me hope that this conversation could be going all across the country. One step closer—one vote closer—to equality.

I thought you would want to know that your video is having a positive effect. Thank you again for posting what needed to be said.

Best,
-Chris

Another update: He got mentioned in Time Magazine (he's the first link on the spoofs in the second to the last paragraph)! AWESOME!

Thank You, Iowa!

Okay, CA--let's get off our collective (and embarrassed) asses and do something about this.

For those of you who have a religious issues with this, why not work on cleaning up your own messes before pointing fingers and throwing stones?

(Is it just me, or is the guy in the picture really cute?)

Attack of The Homosexuals

A satrical look at how gays are "attacking" marriage.

Those gays... they're funny!

Soapbox!

I believe I said before regarding the passing of Prop. 8, that we should continue the Christian Right's mandate of "protecting marriage" by banning divorce. Well, let's sign the petition and get it going:

Ceasing to be an Accomplice of Injustice

Father Geoff is a Catholic Priest in Fresno, CA who came out to his parishioners this weekend while urging them to vote No on Proposition 8. Half the parishioners gave him a standing ovation.

Below is the beginning of his sermon. The rest can be found at World of Jeff, who is a friend of Father Geoff. In his blog, Jeff ends with "I am so proud of him." We all are, Jeff, for good reason. Below is Farther Geoff's sermon:

As most of you know, I was appointed pastor here at the Newman Center on April 15th of this year. When I arrived, I set out to address a series of various projects to repair our facilities. To date, most of these deferred maintenance items have been addressed. In the middle of dealing with contractors, the parish finance committee, the building department of the diocese, neighbors, etc., I received a FAX from the bishop’s office on the 30th of June. It was the bishop’s pastoral letter for the month of July.

This single FAX threw my whole summer, and in fact, my whole life into a turmoil. Recently, I was speaking with some of our parishioners who advocate for the ordination of women. In the course of our conversation, a question arose which has haunted me: “At what point do you cease to be an agent for healing and growth and become an accomplice of injustice?” By asking all of the pastors of the Diocese of Fresno to promote Catholics to vote “Yes” on Proposition 8, the bishop has placed me in a moral predicament.

In his “Pastoral,” the bishop states: “Marriage is much more than simply two persons loving each other. Marriage is naturally, socially, and biologically, directed to bringing forth life.”

Actually, there are TWO ends to marriage: 1) Unitive and 2) Procreative. The unitive end of marriage is simply a union of love and life. The Procreative end is, of course, to create new life. It is important to understand that the unitive end of marriage is sufficient for a valid marriage. The Church sanctions, and considers a sacrament, the marriage of elderly heterosexual couples who are biologically incapable of reproduction. So, if two people of different genders who are incapable of reproduction can enter into a valid marriage, then why is that two people of the same gender, who are incapable of reproduction, cannot enter into a valid marriage.

The objections which are raised at this point are taken from Sacred Scripture. Scripture scholars reveal the problematic nature of attempting to use passages from the Hebrew Scriptures as an argument against same gender relationships. Essentially, these scriptures are addressing the cultic practices in which sex with temple prostitutes was part of an act of worshiping Pagan gods. With regard to the Pauline epistles, John J. McNeill, in his book: “The Church and the Homosexual,” makes the following point: “The persons referred to in Romans 1:26 are probably not homosexuals that is, those who are psychologically inclined toward their own sex—since they are portrayed as ‘abandoning their natural customs.’” The Pauline epistles do not explicitly treat the question of homosexual activity between two persons who share a homosexual orientation, and as such cannot be read as explicitly condemning such behavior. Therefore, same gender sex by two individuals with same sex orientation is not “abandoning their natural custom.”

Love Poem

"The greatest of these is love."

For all of you Californians, please vote NO on 8!

And if you have the time, tell The Governator he's a homophobic douchebag for not approving Harvey Milk Day.

Word.

I couldn't say it better myself. Reasons to Outlaw Gay Marriage, by Guy Dads (an adorable couple who describe themselves as "Two gay fathers meet and fall in love. Married in a Jewish wedding ceremony on June 19, 2005". Good fathers. Good people. Good read.

Do You Know Where You Were…

…when the first gay folks got married?

Today, June 16, 2008 at 5:01pm, The Gays will be able to get legally married in the State of California. There will be flowers. There will be tears. There will be happiness and joy of a previously unimaginative intensity. It has been a long time coming.

Like the gentrification of old neighborhoods, The Gays will come in and wrestle marriage from its staid trappings and make it wonderful and fabulous again. Like the fashion industry, The Gays will set a new standard in style and behavior for weddings. We will pull it up from its depressed state and make The Hets realize that Star Trek Weddings and Fat-Elvis Impersonators should be banished forever.

Once marriages are “fixed” we can move to the next step to show The Hets how things are done: Divorce.

“Scandalous divorces” happen all the time for The Hets. Right now, there’s some woman on YouTube babbling about her husband’s porn and Viagra. It’s all the rage. People are constantly talking about it. Really. They are. The question is… why?

After decades of watching Dynasty and the soaps, we understand drama. We understand shocking. We understand scandal.

And we do it so much better!

Just think of the fantastic divorces! The information flying out from each camp. The dirt. The fantastic dirt! You can practically smell it! “He told me to call him ‘my little piss pig’” or “After fisting him…”

Information will flow like the Bush White House on a witch hunt. Nothing will be sacred, including weddings. Considering the way weddings have been handled up to now will be no different today than yesterday. Fixed up or not, we will be equal… as we should be.
