What’s Your Pledge?

It's a new America... once again full of promise. Damn, it feels good to have hope again!

They WHAT?!

Someone needs to explain to this woman the difference between a fist bump and fisting. There’s a difference—a HUGE difference.

Spontaneous Joy

You know, when I get bummed about the passing of Prop. 8 (see below), I have to try and remember the joy of an historic election night. Can anyone remember when there were spontaneous bursts of crowds rushing into the streets to celebrate an election? I certainly don't remember any of this happening when Bush was (kind of) elected:

Meet Your New President

I honestly cannot remember the last time I was this excited and hopeful about the election of a president. I remember being relieved when Clinton won his second term, but this is different. This feels much better.
Wow!

I'm sure you've all seen this already... but it's so impressive, it's worth another look.

Ooga-Booga

This explains a lot: John McCain is being hexed by Obama's relatives in Kenya... even FOX News is involved! There's something about figure eights around McCain... I couldn't make heads or tails because it was all so ridiculous. They come up with all kinds of reasons for losing. Their candidate isn't losing because he's run a poor campaign, no... it's because a hex has been put on him. Yeah, that makes sense.
They want you to pray for McCain to reverse the hex. Instead, pray for these guys that they get their heads out of their asses (after the election...).
Vote!

Disbelief of Suspension

"You don't suspend your campaign. This doesn't smell right. This isn't the way a tested hero behaves. I think someone's putting something in his Metamucil. He can't run the campaign because the economy is cratering? Fine, put in your second string quarterback, Sara Palin. Where is she? What are you going to do if you're elected and things get tough? Suspend being president? We've got a guy like that now!"
-- David Letterman, talking about John McCain
From Deus Ex Malcontent

UPDATE: Cancelling on Letterman is a bad idea... I'm sure McCain is regretting that after last night's show.

Do the right thing.

TRUE

Scotty sent this to me from Craigslist. All true:

Double-standards gets Idiot's Elected in America.

If you're a minority and you're selected for a job over more qualified candidates you're a 'token hire.'

If you're a conservative and you're selected for a job over more qualified candidates you're a 'game changer.'

Black teen pregnancies? A 'crisis' in black America .

White teen pregnancies? A 'blessed event.'

If you grow up in Hawaii you're 'exotic.'

Grow up in Alaska eating mooseburgers, you're the quintessential 'American story.'

Similarly, if you name you kid Barack you're 'unpatriotic.'

Name your kid Track, you're 'colorful.'

If you're a Democrat and you make a VP pick without fully vetting the individual you're 'reckless.' A Republican who doesn't fully vet is a 'maverick.'

If you spend 3 years as a community organizer growing your organization from a staff of 1 to 13 and your budget from $70,000 to $400,000, then become the first black President of the Harvard Law Review, create a voter registration drive that registers 150,000 new African American voters, spend 12 years as a Constitutional Law professor, then spend nearly 8 more years as a State Senator representing a district with over 750,000 people, becoming chairman of the state Senate's Health and Human Services committee, then spend nearly 4 years in the United States Senate representing a state of nearly 13 million people, sponsoring 131 bills and serving on the Foreign Affairs, Environment and Public Works and Veteran's Affairs committees, you are woefully inexperienced.

If you spend 4 years on the city council and 6 years as the mayor of a town with less than 7,000 people, then spend 20 months as the governor of a state with 650,000 people, you've got the most executive experience of anyone on either ticket, are the Commander in Chief of the Alaska military and are well qualified to lead the nation should you be called upon to do so because your state is the closest state to Russia.

If you are a Democratic male candidate who is popular with millions of people you are an 'arrogant celebrity'. If you are a popular republican female candidate you are 'energizing the base'.

If you are a younger male candidate who thinks for himself and makes his own decisions you are 'presumptuous'. if you are an older male candidate who makes last minute decisions you refuse to explain, you are a 'shoot from the hip' maverick.

If you are a candidate with a Harvard law degree you are 'an elitist 'out of touch' with the real America .

If you are a legacy (dad and granddad were admirals) graduate of Annapolis, graduating fifth from the bottom of your class, with multiple disciplinary infractions you are a hero.

If you manage a multi-million dollar nationwide campaign, you are an 'empty suit'. If you are a part time mayor of a town of 7000 people, you are an 'experienced executive'.

If you go to a south side Chicago church, your beliefs are 'extremist'.

If you believe in creationism and don't believe global warming is man made, you are 'strongly principled'.

If you cheated on your first wife with a rich heiress, and left your disfigured wife and married the heiress the next month, you're a Christian.

If you have been married to the same woman for 19 years with whom you are raising 2 beautiful daughters you're 'risky'.

If you're a black single mother of 4 who waits for 22 hours after her water breaks to seek medical attention, you're an irresponsible parent, endangering the life of your unborn child, but if you're a white married mother who waits 22 hours, you're spunky.

If you're a 13-year-old Chelsea Clinton, the right-wing press calls you 'First dog.'

If you're a 17-year old pregnant unwed daughter of a Republican, the right-wing press calls you 'beautiful' and 'courageous.'

If you kill an endangered species, you're an excellent hunter.

If you have an abortion you're not a christian, you're a murderer ( forget about if it happen while being date raped)

If you teach abstinence only in sex education, you get teen parents.

If you teach responsible age appropriate sex education, including the proper use of birth control, you are eroding the fiber of society.

McCain Gets OBama-Rolled!

I've been over the Rick-rolled thing for a while now... but here's a fresh take--with some clever editing--that has won me over.

Nice Parenting, Palin

I guess you can't have it all: Sarah Palin's unwed 17 year-old daughter is pregnant. Apparently, she is "delighted" at the news, as all mothers of unwed 17 year-old pregnant daughters are. Well, being governor and working so hard for the State of Alaska must have taken so much time out of the time she ordinarily would have been parenting her child. One can only imagine the results if she becomes Vice-President.

Remember what happened to Jenna Bush? First, she was a drunk who was almost arrested (just like daddy) and then she married a REPUBLICAN. The horror! Oh, wait... I'm sure her parents liked that. Still, it's pretty disturbing that she's going to breed. Do we need any more Bushes? No. Am I way off topic? Yes.

I say it here and now: Vote for Obama, if only for the sake of Palin's family. Besides, as The Daily Show so brilliantly points out to us: He Completes Us.

Portrayal Of Obama As Elitist Hailed As Step Forward For African Americans

Wednesday, August 27, 2008

“No way. No how. No McCain.”

Hillary Clinton knocked it out of the ballpark last night. Her speech at the DNC Convention in Denver was brilliant and effective. While not a personal endorsement of Barak Obama, she laid out in VERY clear terms why her supporters need to vote for Obama:

“Were you in this campaign just for me? Were you in it for that young Marine and others like him? Were you in it for that mom struggling with cancer while raising her kids? Were you in it for that boy and his mom surviving on the minimum wage? Were you in it for all the people in this country who feel invisible?”

I continue to shake my head in wonder at those ‘spoiled children’ that won’t vote for Obama because he beat Hillary. Or—more aptly—will vote for McCain because he’s not Obama (who beat Hillary). I was eight when I first understood the idiocy of cutting off my nose to spite my face—yet, these people continue on that path. Thank you, Hillary for letting your supporters know that to vote for McCain is a disservice to you and all you’ve worked for:

“I haven’t spent the past 35 years in the trenches advocating for children, campaigning for universal health care, helping parents balance work and family, and fighting for women’s rights at home and around the world … to see another Republican in the White House squander the promise of our country and the hopes of our people.”

Brava!

There were some nice touches, the “No way. No how. No McCain” being at the top of the list. I also thought her “Sisterhood of the travelling pantsuits” to be particularly amusing. She seemed to be in her element last night and I know that if she had been the nominee she would have made a fine president (and still can someday).
However, now it is Barak’s time. We need to get out there and vote for him to put this country on its intended path and to right the many wrongs of the last eight years.
